Ben Smith, an LHS band student and a flute player of seven years, won the Atlanta Wind Symphony Concerto Competition on February 15, 2019. At the beginning of this competition, he competed with about eighty to a hundred fellow flautists, which was then reduced to a pool of seven. After a live audition at Milton High School, Ben was individually selected to receive the scholarship. This scholarship allows the winner an opportunity to play with the Atlanta Wind Symphony on May 11, 2019 at Kennesaw State University along with a $500 scholarship to be used for private lessons, music summer camps, instrument upgrades, or other purchases related to music. On Ben’s dedication to music, his father, Coach Smith said, “He’s very serious about it. He loves doing it, too. We never have to tell him to practice,” he laughed, “in fact, sometimes I have to tell him to stop.” He further explained that because Ben is so motivated, his biggest responsibility as his father is making sure Ben makes time to take care of himself among his academic and extracurricular activities. Coach Smith commented about Ben’s passion and aptitude for flute, “It’s kind of one of those things where you just find your niche. You kind of just find the thing that drives the engine.”
