This year, the State Wrestling Tournament lasted four days, February 13th - 16th. It determined the best wrestlers in the state at certain weight classes within certain groups of schools. The tournament was held in Macon, Georgia at the Macon Arena. The wrestlers that competed for Loganville were Nico Eberheart, sophomore, at weight class 113, Brandon Roberts, junior, at weight class 120, Jackson Herman, sophomore, at weight class 152, and Brian Stratford, sophomore, at weight class 182. Coach Greaves, the wrestling coach, called this competition, “the culminating event of the season.” He went on to add, “It is used more as a measuring stick for the individual wrestler to see where they end up in the season.” Nico Eberheart commented, “I thought it would be cool to go with my friends to state and try to just place or at least make it there because that’s huge! Not a lot of people in the season even get the chance to make it that far to state.” First, wrestlers must compete in two follow-up competitions to qualify for this tournament. Then, only the top six are given medals and are considered “State Placers”. In the lead up to the event, Brian Stratford shared that there was a lot of preparation before any wrestling competition. Nico said one of the most challenging things about the competition was “getting [his] mind focused and not eating so much food.” When asked about Brandon Roberts, Coach Greaves said, “B-rob [Brandon Roberts] was washy, going in and out of concussions and losing his spot to a freshman and gaining it back.” Upon considering strengths and weaknesses, Brian noted, “My biggest obstacle was definitely just sickness which hit me several times.” Despite all of this, the Loganville High School wrestlers were able to make it to the state competition and accomplish something much only hope for. Sharing his final thoughts about the competition, Coach Greaves said, “State’s fun - it’s just a cool atmosphere... it’s just fun seeing the guys react to it. I think that’s the biggest thing, is just seeing those guys get that first win or just realize that ‘hey, I’m doing it on the big stage on the big arena.’ It’s just a fun experience.”
