The Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl is a competitive team here at Loganville. This team reads twenty books chosen from the list of Georgia Peach Book Award Nominees for Teen Readers. The team then competes against other schools in Georgia over these twenty books in a reading bowl. While twenty books may seem like a lot, Mrs. Crowe, the director of the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl at LHS, says, “Each of the five team members are assigned four books to read.” This way the twenty books are distributed evenly amongst the team members, and this allows each team member to know their four books in depth. This year, the reading bowl team has been doing very well. Loganville has had a Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl Team for about seven years. However, the team has never made it to the state level. In order to make it to the state level, the team must place first or second in a preliminary competition. The team this year is hoping to be the first reading bowl team at LHS to make it to state. While this team brings students together to compete, it also connects students from all backgrounds. According to Michael Fraser, a student on the LHS Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl team, “The Reading Bowl has helped me meet people who I otherwise wouldn’t have talked to.” The Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl team has helped students find a place at LHS that fits them and highlights their best skills.
